When the news reaches Tintin that his old friend Emir Ben Kalish has been ousted in Khemed, the intrepid reporter heads there without any further ado. But lurking in the shadows is an international hoodlum, the infamous Marquis de Gongfermour who makes his money by trading in slaves, and who'll do anything to protect his feindish interests. Although Tintin, Milyn and Capten Hadog succeed in escaping perils in the desert, even more dangerous perils face them aboard the steamer Rachub, plying its trade on the Red Sea.
